PR for Startups: Standing out in the Sea of Pitches

PR for Startups

Storytelling Should Be at the Core of Your Startup
Storytelling should be at the core of your startup as it generates awareness about your product or services. The reality is that we live in an incredibly noisy world—and no one cares.

How can you differentiate your brand and story from the sea of startup pitches?

1. Start Building Relationships as Early as Possible

As some would say, 99% of PR is relationships. You have to connect not just with journalists but also with community builders as early as possible in your startup journey.

2. Be the Roger Federer of Your Field

Develop as much expertise as possible. You have to be able to write about your area of expertise—this is what’s called “authority.” Building this takes time and comes from your story and experience. When you keep shipping as a founder, good things can happen.

3. Don’t Wait Until You Raise a Round

There are plenty of opportunities for founders to get coverage in various publications. Check out our PR newsletter for opportunities to get featured. Many high-quality publications seek experts or quotes for their coverage. When you reach out, be brief and add value.

4. Stand Out in the Sea of Pitches

Journalists and editors are bombarded with hundreds of pitches every day. Engage with their work as early as possible—this can include following them on social media, commenting on their articles, or sharing their work.

5. Set Up a Press Page on Your Site (YourWebsite.com/press)

Many startups miss this opportunity, but no one wants to see another faceless brand. Showcase who is behind your company and why your mission matters. Include high-quality photos of your founding team on that page.

6. Join Founder Communities

Building a startup in isolation is the worst thing you can do. Join tech and founder communities to stay in the loop and gain valuable connections.

7. Develop a Global Mindset

Entrepreneurship is a global game. From day one, think about how you can build products or services with a global impact, not just a local one.

Storytelling is a long-term game. You have to invest in it from the very beginning of your journey as a founder.
